Perhaps grandpa was working with the abysmals to keep the war going, maybe ido is doing this to announce his capture of a certain clumsy battleship

Wait a minute... is that a GAZ-MM? The truck used by the Red Army and retrofitted into all kinds of antiair technicals? Chassis looks highly similar but the wheels are kinda small.

    I think you meant "primaries"?

    @homegrownhero
IIRC Graf Zeppelin has 15 cm (5.87 inch) guns.

Think those still count as her primary battery though (even if planes are supposed to be her main 'armament'). Though, same guns as the secondaries on Bismarck. And in greater numbers too, because someone was drunk (figuratively) when the chief engineer proposed to "double up on the guns to save space" (put them in twin-gun turrets, he meant).

(The Bismarck and Scharnhorst classes got twelve 15cm guns as secondaries. Graf got sixteen [but as 'primaries'], up from her the eight in her original design because of said epic misunderstanding.)

    Eboreg said:

To clarify, Graf's proposed design would have had twelve 10.5 cm (4.1 in) SK C/33 guns as secondaries, exactly the same as the Admiral Hipper-class. That said, those are all antiaircraft guns.

Okay, let me see if I can predict what's going to happen next:

    • A standoff between the rest of the JSMDF and the Foreign Shipgirls' Dorm ensues.
    • De Ruyter, using money from one of her ventures, offers to buy Black Kashima and Katori from the Japanese government. As the standoff is earning them the enmity of the rest of the world, they agree.
    • De Ruyter turns around and sells the two of them to the UK government, not being entirely accurate about their combat abilities.
    • The UK Government, not happy they just overspent on two less-than-useful shipgirls, do what they did with the ships they didn't want during WWII; give them to Poland.
    • Poland, seeing little use in shipgirls who can't fight very well or speak their language, decide to send them to Japan, since that seems to be what every other country is doing.
    • The two remain regular characters, with Kashima trying to adapt to her "new homeland", while Katori can barely be bothered to remember she isn't technically still part of Japan.

I... was referring to the primaries. Yes, the Graf Zeppelin was designed to have 8 8-inch guns mounted in 4 dual turrets.

Battleships (and to a lesser extent early model carriers) had what amounted to a light cruiser strapped to either side.

    Oh.

Well, hmm, comparing primaries, IIRC the 15cm/55 SK C/28 fired shells around 45kg in mass, while the Admiral Hipper class' 20.3cm/60 SK C/34 fire those around 120kg? So Pringles has about 3x the mass but half the number of guns shooting, so about 1.5x in a barrage.

Though the 20.3cm shells only have like twice the amount of explosive filler of their 15cm counterparts (forgot the exact numbers). Then again, while the "energy" (theoretical amount of work performed under ideal conditions) of the explosion scales with explosive mass (in theory), the actual destructive potential isn't exactly linear...

And with firing rates factored in... the 15cm/55 SK C/28 do fire faster, but the ones on Graf are sort of slapped haphazardly on the corners like an afterthought so they don't exactly have good firing arcs. Also I think they're probably less stable and are susceptible to getting flooded.

That's what I thought too, I wouldn't be surprised if the "fake" Akashi is revealed to be working for the Vice-Admiral and was beta-testing the Abyssal-Shipgirl hybrid equipment on Haruna and Kaga to get valuable data and create an incident that the Vice-Admiral could use to court-martial the Admiral. (although one of her lines of dialogue very strongly implies that the fake Akashi was an Abyssal, so maybe the Vice-Admiral is in even in ever shadier business than we thought)

Well, it's fine if Japan declares war on the rest of the the world again in the name of treating sentient shipgirls like slaves.

It's not like the rest of the world couldn't stomp them into extinction...

After a quick review, at least the former could be called an accident. This was entirely deliberate. Either way, really depends on how important Gangut and Verniy are considered to the Russian Navy.

Verniy probably means more to the Japanese than she does to the Russians since she was little more than a Cold-war era barracks ship and later a target vessel. Gangut... that could be a little more challenging.

Realistically speaking, Japan could be heavily reliant on Russian oil imports in this setting due to the fact that their RL middle-eastern convoys might be cut off due to Abyssal interference and... well... common enemy.

I don't think Verniy's history is relevant here. She's part of the Russian forces now (I think?) and she was attacked by a member of what was supposed to be an allied military under orders from a high-ranking officer. That could be seen as an act of war.

Maybe this is going to end with Japan throwing the Vice-Admiral under the bus to avoid an international incident.

No, they'll double down and blame the Allies for their unprovoked aggression against their internal affairs, even though it involves slavery. And then tell their public that they're being persecuted again by white imperialist Foreigners who want to colonize them.

Then they'll join the Abyssal fleetand start forcibly converting their citizens and brainwash them.

    I'll what!?
The Special Police force is also tasked with the suppression of rebellious shipgirls, so...
This is the Foreign Ship's Dormitory!!!
    Whassat, Princess?
    Ohh?
Please, let us get on board!
    After them, Kirishima!
    What was...
    Katori-nee! Run!
Man, seems like the gas main down there exploded somehow...
    Raagh!
Kirishima will catch and dispose of those two without fail!
    She's coming!
    This isn't good!
    She'll catch up to us!
What in the hell... do you think you're doing!?
    Release Kirishima!
I'm afraid... you'll have to take a rain check on that.
I cannot permit you to get in the way of Katori and Kashima's disposal!!
I don't care how! Clean up this mess!!
Letting them escape was a mistake, commander.
Well aren't you a mouthy SOB. Prepare that face for my fist!
    Excuse us!
...can't lay a finger on Katori and Kashima anymore!
    MY BOOZE DELIVERYYYYYY!!!!
    AHHHHHHH!!
What the hell is that Kirishima even on!?
Just blasting around inside the damn base!
You're driving under the influence, though...
    The rear wheels!
Its extraterritorially means that even a vice-admiral like yourself...
Oh, you've really done it now...
    Oh, that's just messed up!
    Hic!
    Cough Cough
    We're done for!
Sorry, but as you can clearly see, this ain't no taxi we're driving.
...if she's under orders from her superiors, she's permitted to fire shells anywhere she likes!!
    Blin!(Frack!)
Literally, "pancake" (the thin kind), but also used as a euphemism of "blyat" (whore), the infamous "ubiquitous" multi-functional Russian swear word that can be used pretty much anywhere, like the English "fuck". The Japanese text uses "kuso" (shit), which can vary in severity from mild (kids can get away with using it) to severe (like dropping an f-bomb), depending on intonation and intent.
We're bustin' on through! Hold tight!
If nothing else, I'm pleased to see you unharmed, vice-admiral.
