Why are Touhou and Monster Hunter refrenced together? Is it just a phase of japanese culture I never really got into, or something in Monster Hunter or Touhou that refers to the other...?
It's usually called a parody, and nothing but an artist's whim is needed for one to happen, so no, there's not necessarily any connection between any two works being parodied.
