Not really a good reason to follow them because they say so. Because western names and Japanese names are two different things.
Animé writers be like, "I extensively researched 19th-Century England to make my series, including an exact historical date to set it on and historical events to cross-reference it with," and then be like, "Oh, I put their family name in the wrong place? Pfft, no one will notice."
