Does anyone know when anime characters first started showing up on military aircraft? And would this count as Itasha?

The Idolmaster crew as far as I know is the first and only to be put on military aircraft as DLC paint schemes for the 360 game Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation.

I personally would count it as Itasha, only technically since the term is used for car decoration. If someone were to slap on their favorite character on a motorcycle, it would be called Itansha.

No problem. Given how expensive Itasha is, a simple painting on military aircraft seems paltry on top of all the other costs associated (maintenance, fuel, etc.).

What a blow it would be for an enemy pilot to be taken out by a cute girl with a stuffed bunny. I think that would be a tactical advantage. *writes congressman*

Feels the need to asshole'ishly note that modern long range missiles mean you never even SEE the enemy planes anymore. :p

    A minor setback.

Gentlemen, to the missiles! We have much to paint.

Well, then maybe they could show up on enemy radar as pink hearts instead of blips.

The airplane isn't a Mirage 2000-5. Its a Rafale M. Mirage has one engine, Rafale has two. Also, the Rafale has chin mounted intakes and canards, the Mirage has side mounted intakes and no canards. And to maintain these aircraft with these paint schemes takes a lot of work. This airplane, the Rafale M is a carrier aircraft. Paint speeds corrosion when it comes into contact with sea water.

Nevermind, never saw the Rafale tag. D: And I just noticed the chibi Mirage 2000-5 in the picture. Sorry 'bout all that.
