They should make a unified group of all the “gangs” who poach and abuse Pokémon thus far. How would the protagonists fight this new threat AND be league champion?
The group will fall apart almost immediately because there is no unified goal between the groups (and indeed some of their goals are diametrically opposed to each other, Magma and Aqua being the obvious one) and they're basically all egotistical jerks.

And that amount of in-fighting and backstabbing while trying to aim at one goal is the kind of drama people like.
