The fun part is trying to decipher what the unown spell out on the top and bottom. I'm pretty sure it's romaji.

Remember in one of the the first episodes of pokemon, ash saw that tablet with the legendary pokemon on it, arcanine was on it, so that might be part of it. Ho-oh was there too.

No. Despite the fact that the legendary battle music plays when you encounter Rotom, it's not considered a legendary. (it can produce eggs, for one thing.)

Arcanine's species is "Legendary Pokemon" and it's referred to in most all of the Pokedex entries as a legendary/legend as well, despite it not being part of any in-game legendary trios or what have you. That's likely why it was depicted along with the other legendary birds in episode 2 and also why it's pictured here.

Also: I feel like a nerd for being able to read the unown part without any sort of guide (would have been flawless if it wasn't for that darn 'g' that always throws me.) Too bad I still have only a very rough idea as to what it's saying once I transcribed it...

No Ninetales? I thought it was a Kyuubi on "Fire/Leaf"

The Pokedex info of Arcanine does mark him as "legendary". As for Rotom he was never marked as being legendary despite having the legendary theme when you encounter him.

Oh! And D.W. - Ninetales has always been based on the kyuubi in terms of design but it's never really referred to as having any sort of status because of it. The species does have its fair share of legends and folklore, however - likely a bit of spillover from the real world kyuubi association.

Arcanine was on it, yes. Ash wrongly called Articuno Ho-oh however.

Dragonite, Tyranitar, Slaking, Salamence, Metagross, and Garchomp all have higher base stat totals.

That's bad logic.

They are rare. There's only one of each of them. If you were to lump all the real world mythos you'd have a quite a pile too, that wouldnt make them any less legendary.

Ah, I see. When a whole bunch of legendaries showed up in the list, I assumed that was it. However, Acanine's base stat total is still unique (555; the others are 600, except Slaking, with 670).

Being a part of absolutely no region's myths, I feel kinda bad for it. But I guess that's how it likes it.
