それとも少女が夢見た光景？
今はもう、その真相を知る者はいない。

【西行寺幽々子】
亡霊にして、冥界は白玉楼の主。
『白玉楼』の名は、大陸の故事において、文人塁客が死後に住まう場所として語られるものであるらしい。
幽々子は風流を好む亡霊なので、その住まいに白玉楼はぴったり。

【亡霊】
本来、生き物が死すれば『幽霊』となり、冥界へと導かれる。
しかし一部の人間は、その死後、自身の死を認めたくない強い念や、自らの死に気づいていないとの理由から、『亡霊』になることがあるという。
幽霊とは違い、亡霊は明確な姿を持ち、触れても冷たくなく、物に触れたりもできるため、普通の人間とほとんど見分けがつかないらしい。

幽々子は生前の記憶こそ無いものの、死を自覚……自分を亡霊、つまり死んだ人間であると認識している。
それでは、なぜ彼女は亡霊になったのか？ それは一切の謎である。
もしかしたら彼女の失われた記憶に、何か原因があるのかもしれない。

きさらぎの
　　　望月のころ――

彼女は今日も、歌を詠む。
幽霊たちが、それを聴くのみ。

A Time When the Girl Lived

Spring has now arrived
Bringing everyone a smile I am so happy
The flowers are beautiful
They smell lovely, do they not?

“That was excellent, Princess.”
“I would expect nothing less from our Lord’s daughter.”
“How splendidly cute.”

…Is this really what happened in the past? Or is it merely the girl’s dream. There is no longer anyone around who knows the truth.

Yuyuko Saigyouji is a ghost and the head of Hakugyokurou in the Netherworld. According to Chinese legend, Hakugyokurou is the place where writers and artists go after they die. Yuyuko is a ghost who enjoys the arts, so Hakugyokurou is the perfect home for her.

Usually, when living beings die, they become phantoms and are led to the Netherworld. However, some humans become ghosts after they die because they vehemently refuse to believe in their death or do not realize that they are dead. Unlike phantoms, ghosts have a corporeal form, are not cold to the touch, and can interact with objects, making them almost indistinguishable from normal humans.

Although Yuyuko has no memories from when she lived, she is aware of the fact that she has died and is a ghost. Thus it begs the question of how she became a ghost. It is a complete mystery. Perhaps the answer lies in her forgotten memories…

… that full moon of Kisaragi month. She continues to recite poetry even now. However, only the phantoms are there to listen.
