The phase is also used to describe flip phones, or phones that flip open(i found examples for instance of "flip smartphones"), therefore, I can only assume from the shape of the container, that the term is used for the opening(and possibly closing) of clamshell shaped objects(flip phones, suitcases, etc.) so perhaps a popping sound would be a better equivalent.
