The critters around Cutlass are from a family of sea slugs called "nudibranchs". They are often brightly colored and toxic to the touch. The tuft of protrusions on their backs are kind of like gills, increasing the surface area for respiration, while the two things near the front are sensory organs, kind of like antennae.
