    IDK if they are both trolling (doubt it), but nitori having lots of shirikodama makes you reconsider her friendliness to humans.

    It's an artificial substitute that she's been developing.

    Seriously, if you tried counting the number of Shiroikodama Nitori throws out, either Gensokyo has a much more massive population than previously thought, Nitori's been storing up food for centuries, or they're not actually Shirikodama.

    Kappa don't have to kill people to get shirikodama any more.
    A good part of it has to do with the fact people no longer dump their waste on rice paddies.

    Also it's not food but a powerful mostly non lethal chemical warfare agent much more effective then CS gas.
    They harvest from the Genskoyo sewage treatment plant now.
    Oh and the Mikawashima Waste water treatment plant in Tokyo is actually ran by kappa.

    Legend has it Thomas Crapper himself taught them how to recover it from raw sewage.

    Shirikodama is really just concentrated skatole and indole with a little mercapton mixed in and placed in a glass sphere that can be hurled at a would be attacker in defence.

    The US military has used a very similar compound except mounted in the nose cone of a missile to drive Al-Qaeda out of caves in Afghanistan and a less concentrated variant sprayed from fire trucks as general crowd control in Iraq.
