Reed HAS canonically sold patents for money before; he did so during Mark Waid's run, and I'd be surprised if he was the first writer to have him do so. He probably lets himself become too occupied with the crazy things he researches and the FF encounter to come up with a cheap flying car/more stuffage for the common man. (Which either he or Tony developed for S.H.I.E.L.D., I'm sure.)

If I remember right, Richards gets his money from companies that pay him to NOT release his inventions so they don't goout of business. Hell, he's probably got things that'll make EVERYTHING obsolete.
