He has that sword because it makes him look cool, lol obviously. But actualy, it is explained in one of the movies as to why he needed to use the sword in the first place, i forgot though, seen it a long time ago, sry.

Depends on which trunks you're referring to. Kid Trunks got his sword from the tapion movie, while future trunks acquiring of his sword was never explain.
