It was just an error in the anime. Since Toriyama hadn't done any color drawings of Vegeta and Nappa yet at the time that episode was being made, Toei just guessed.

Same with the weird green armor.
This pallete is even included among Vegeta's costumes in the Tenkaichi Bodokai games.

If you look at Kai, you'll notice that Vegeta and Nappa's color palattes are the usual colors, instead of these "prototype" colors.

I'm actually really fond of these colors. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing but It makes him look more menacing and other worldly.

I think it makes him look faster.
