If you actually look at the bone structure of the hand, there is a "joined joint" below each of the phalanges(Fingers) called the metacarpals. They are stuck together with ligaments so the can't move independently of each other. What you see as the knuckles when you make a fist is actually the lateral edge of the metacarpals. /Anatomy lesson.
