Artist's commentary

  • Part 10 and 11 of How to Draw Kimono, this time on Hakama.
There are many different types of hakama, but I picked the common two that is used widely: Umanori-Bakama and Andon-Bakama.
Umanori-Bakama is what men wear as a formal wear. It’s the pants type (though it seems more like skirts because of how loose it is).
Andon-Bakama is the skirt type where it is completely open on the inside. This is typically worn by women for their graduation. (Female students used to wear them as regular school clothes in the early 1900s).
