It's actually a (perfectly understandable) mistranslation. 畳 (じょう jyou) is a counter of tatami mats, which is a commonly used representation of the size of a room in Japan (for instance, apartment listings will often state the number of mats as opposed to the square footage). Wikipedia says a single mat is about 3 feet by 6 feet, and a Minecraft block is said to be about a square meter, so a 2-jyou house would have about 4 blocks of floor space, whereas a 4.5-jyou house would have about 9 blocks of floor space.
