A 2020s NASA-led lunar exploration program intended to land humans back on the Moon by 2028.
In addition to landing humans on the Moon for the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972, it also intends to establish a permanent human presence on the lunar surface, both for research and as a stepping stone for future manned missions to Mars. Private spaceflight companies have also been contracted to provide certain components, most notably lunar landers and space suits.
It is named after Apollo's twin sister, Artemis, as it is intended as a spiritual successor to the 1960s Apollo Program.
