The prototype of the coin bangs can be traced back to the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties period in China. It evolved into a fixed stylistic form through the development of Chinese Kunqu opera, and was later carried on into other Chinese opera genres such as Peking opera. Its defining feature is the arrangement of circular hair bangs in the shape of copper coins.
