Depictions of a dark and depressed world and the antonym to utopia. Typically involves suppressive regime, mass surveillance, constant fight for survival, environmental disaster, or other characteristics associated with a cataclysmic decline in society.
Dystopia is widely seen as the opposite of utopia – a concept coined by Thomas More in 1516 to describe an ideal society.
Not to be confused with post-apocalypse, which depicts the world after civilizations has long gone.
