A military officer responsible for the supervision, ideological education/doctrine and organization of the unit to which they are assigned, with the intention of ensuring political control and allegiance of the military.
The presence of political commissars is widely associated with socialist armed forces such as the International Brigades, the Soviet Red Army (especially during World War II), East German Nationale Volksarmee, and present-day China's People's Liberation Army.
