A character being shown in multiple variations, usually different outfits or appearances.

The character's pose and basic appearance should stay mostly the same, with only one aspect of their appearance changing, such as their hair or clothes. The variations are usually drawn side-by-side for easy comparison. If the difference is more significant, use multiple views instead.

Variations are commonly seen in character reference sheets, or in clothes on and off images.

This should be differentiated from progression or sequential actions, such as a frame-by-frame rendition of a dance, or the stages of the making-of an illustration (sketch, inking, color, etc.). This also does not include comparisons between different characters, or different characters wearing matching outfits.

Not to be confused with variant set, which is a series of different images depicting the same scene with some differences.
