The shortened design of the Soviet AKS-74, first adopted adopted in 1979. It has shorter barrel and gas piston rod, which cause increased rate of fire. The rear sight placement is integrated to the top dust cover, instead of being placed on a block. Due to the short barrel and conical muzzle device, the muzzle flash appears very prominent.

Sometimes in video games, the weapon is inaccurately depicted. For instance, in Call of Duty, it is portrayed having AKMS-styled bottom-folded stock instead of side-folding one, even mistakenly named "AK-74U".
