Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is a domesticated species of South American camelid. It resembles a small llama in superficial appearance. The animal became popular after a Chinese meme became widespread, in which the writer claimed a photoshopped photo of an alpaca as the "Grass Mud Horse" - "草泥马 (Cao Ni Ma)".
In Japan, alpacas are popular since the mid-2000s irrespective of the Chinese movement.
