Usually an artistic error which amateur and professional artists alike are prone to on occasion. Earlier forms of AI-generated art are especially infamous for getting hands wrong this way. When not an error, extra fingers can often be found on mutant or otherwise monstrous humanoids.

Polydactyly is a real, albeit rare, genetic condition. Notable characters with polydactyly include Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of the Lambs, Iwamoto Kogan from Shigurui, and Ford Pines from Gravity Falls.
