glaive (polearm)

A glaive is a European polearm weapon, consisting of a single-edged blade on the end of a pole. It is similar to the Japanese naginata and the Chinese guan dao.

The term "glaive" has also been repurposed in certain (primarily Western) fantasy series to describe an oversized throwing weapon resembling a shuriken, chakram or throwing knife. Do not tag these examples as glaive; use the appropriate tags instead.

Notable characters

  • Tatsuta (Kantai Collection)
  • Hellion (Darkest Dungeon)
  • Sailor Saturn (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon)
    • Her Silence Glaive is technically a glaive-fork, but we currently don't distinguish. And we probably shouldn't.

Tag usage notes

  • Tag glaive when you see the polearm weapon described above.
  • Avoid tagging glaive when the weapon can be more appropriately described with another polearm tag.
    • e.g. naginata, nagimaki, guan dao, scythe, halberd, bardiche, billhook
  • Do not tag throwing weapons with glaive.
    • Even if they are called "glaive" in the series. Use the appropriate throwing weapon tag instead.
    • Unless some crazy person decides to use actual polearm glaives as 'throwing weapons'.
