nebelwerfer

ネーベルヴェルファー

The Nebelwerfer (lit. smoke launcher) is a series of German World War II-era versatile mortar or artillery system that came in various models and calibers, ranging from 10 cm to 32 cm. They are capable of launching various warheads like high-explosive, incendiary, or chemical weapons within the effective range from 2.2 km up to 7.8 km — depending on respective model, caliber and munitions type.

The naming Nebelwerfer was chosen to evade the Treaty of Versailles that restricted Germany from possessing or developing advanced military equipment. Its development was concealed from the Allies as a mere non-lethal smoke-launching device.

One of the most recognizable models is the 15 cm Nebelwerfer 41 (post #10703572). It has six breech-loaded barrels that enable the capability of saturating a large area by firing multiple rockets at once. Due to its distinct high-pitched noise emitted upon firing, the Allies nicknamed it the Screaming Mimi.
