octopus hold

卍固め

Also known as the Octopus Stretch and in Japanese, the Manji-Gatame, it is a submission hold where the wrestler stands behind the opponent and hooks a leg over the opponent's opposite leg. The wrestler then forces the opponent to one side, traps one of the opponent's arms with their own arm and drapes their free leg over the neck of the opponent, forcing it downward. This elevates the wrestler and places all the weight of the wrestler on the opponent. The wrestler has one arm free, which can be used for balance.

It was invented by the late Japanese wrestling legend Antonio Inoki. Some known users of this hold are retired WWE wrestler AJ Lee (who called her version as the Black Widow), New Japan Pro Wrestling and All Elite Wrestling wrestler Shibata Katsuyori, and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling wrestler Jonathan Gresham. New Japan Pro Wrestling wrestler Zack Sabre Jr. uses multiple variations of the hold and the late World Wonder Ring Stardom wrestler Kimura Hana used a grounded variation that she called as the Hydrangea.
