A route that has been paved or otherwise improved for travel by foot or vehicle. Possible road surfaces include dirt, gravel, concrete, and asphalt.

Paved roads in cities are called streets. They may have adjoining sidewalks for pedestrian use. Major roads between or through cities are called highways. Narrow lanes for foot traffic are called paths.
