slackware

Slackware is the oldest Linux distribution still under active maintenance. The distro has an unusual closed development model, with no public repository, and is mostly developed by its creator Patrick Volkerding. New releases happen whenever Volkerding thinks they're distinct enough from the last one and reasonably stable.

It is is further distinguished by its extremely conservative design choices, often with a closer than usual adherence to the Unix philosophy. Packages have no automatic dependency management by default, or even official repositories beyond the installation media. They are also rarely modified from their upstream sources, and there is a general reliance on plaintext configuration files and commandline software over custom graphical frontends. The resulting system is relatively simple compared to other full-featured Linux distros, and is aimed largely at experienced Unix users who find its conservatism and pursuit of slack easy to pick up.

The distribution's mascot is Tux smoking a pipe, a homage to J. R. "Bob" Dobbs.
