The Smith & Wesson SW, better known as the Smith & Wesson Sigma, is a polymer-frame handgun designed by Smith & Wesson. The Sigma series of pistols were Smith & Wesson's first handguns to utilize a polymer frame construction. Additionally, the Sigma was one of the first pistols specifically designed to utilize the .40 S&W cartridge, though 9x19 Parabellum versions were also available.
The Sigma has a rocky history, due to its design being very similar to a Glock in design and operation. This led to Glock suing Smith & Wesson for patent infringement, which resulted in Smith & Wesson having to alter the design and pay an undisclosed settlement to Glock.
