town square

An open public space commonly found in the heart of a traditional town or city, and which is used for community gatherings. At their center is often a well, monument, statue, fountain or other feature, and are usually surrounded by small shops. Also called plaza or piazza.

Not to be confused with a courtyard which is often enclosed/surrounded by walls or buildings.
