Turnip28 is set in a bizarre and decayed world that fell into ruin a thousand years after the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Austerlitz. The Napoleonic wars never ended, having long devolved into an meaningless eternal war. The landscapes of the world have become nothing more than mud-pits and misty swamps. A Strange and horrible root has covered the lands, resulting in large scale decimation and pollution.

Humanity, in its desperation, harvested the awful tuber. This action, while prolonging their survival, came at the cost of the roots twisting their minds and bodies, and plaguing their thoughts with divine visions of lost vegetables. Humanity, now twisted by the Root, continued their wars under the banners of bizarre religious orders, armed with decayed weaponry unearthed from the roots, including muskets which have now become a lost technology.
