i'm not really familiar with Mordred; did type moon portray Mordred as a male? i'd always assumed a female but that's because of saber.

Edit: As per Fate/Apocrypha, Mordred is now confirmed female.

What Type-Moon did was use gender-neutral pronouns for Mordred. Of course that usually makes us immediately think male.
