If you play world of warschips you can see tenryuu is basically a mildly lengthened destroyer, which is historical. She's very small and very thin compared to the Kuma class and succeeding cruiser ships.

Yuubari is also tiny, albeit less ''destroyer-ish''.

Kongou-class is also nearly same sized as later cruisers, they weren't very (long) big battleships.
In arpeggio for example you can see that maya ( closest comparison on this list: Ooyodo) is almost the same lenght as kongou ( Just less wide ) ( which is historical kongou was only 222 meter long)

Tenryuu-class are WWI era ships, Kongou was originally built as battlecruiser, which is kind of a mix between heavy cruiser and battleship, so its kinda reasonable for them to be smaller(shorter)

Fun fact: the Takao-class was also always get misidentified as a Kongou-class by the Allied.

Era isn't necessarily indicative of size, in fact in some ways the war and immediate post-war period was a time of much larger ship construction then the treaty era that followed in the 1920s and 30s. Tenryuu was thus very small even by the standard of the day with many armored cruisers of the period easily topping 10,000 tons displacement, over twice as much.

Battlecruisers, or very fast battleships, were actually most often longer and thinner then BBs because length to beam is an important factor in high speed cruising (cruisers are long for displacement for similiar reasons). Hood was enormous for instance and the Iowas were likewise very long. The later in fact were the longest battleships ever built almost ten meters longer overall then Yamato. The Kongo were in fact also the longest of the Japanese capital ships besides Yamato.

Fun fact: the Takao-class was also always get misidentified as a Kongou-class by the Allied.

I haven't seen a cases of this actually and rather doubt it. Basically none of the major visual indicators used to determine class were similair:
-The Bridges are completely different, in fact easily the most different between any Japanese cruiser and battleship. Takao's superstructure is in fact extremely distinct for the period, as for that matter are the massive pagoda masts that are a hallmark of Japanese capital units.
-The main battery arrangement is massively different in both total number of mounts and their placement.
-The Funnels are very different with the fat fore funnel being an immediately obvious feature only heavy cruisers, and too a lesser extent Yamato have.

Basically almost nothing above the waterline is similiar.

Obviously if conditions were bad any large cruiser might be mistaken for a capital unit, but the Japanese vessels don't seem to have been more prone to this then other examples actually rather the opposite. Trying to discern a Hipper from Bismark or a Baltimore from an Iowa or Sodak at a distance would've been a far more difficult task. Baltimore I think perhaps would be the biggest challenge, it really was basically Iowa's mini-me

Interesting, The difference between kongou's and the other Battleships outside of Yamato is only around 18m at max. But you are indeed correct. It's just that the later Heavy cruisers were largely very thin and almost as long as battleships in general.

    Hah! Katori is TINY!

You know, if you converted m to cm, the light cruisers would be about normal human size. (162cm = 5'4")

Ooyodo would be fairly tall (6'4")
Agano and RJ only somewhat tall (ignoring "cheating", 5'10")
Tenryuu VERY short (4'8") and Yubari the same (4'7")
    Katori is tiny (4'4")
    Hatsuyuki is grade schooler (3'11")
Yamato would bump her head on the ceiling of most buildings (8'8" - most buildings have 8' clearance.)

Then you don't want to meet Iowa, she was longer than Yamato by 7 m (in terms of overall length) and would tower over Yamato

In a height converter change the metres to Centermetres when converting a Kanmusu's height length into feet and you'll have their height as a Kanmusu.
