I wanted this pair to work, but I also feel that the boy here is trying to be a man for someone he already likes. That'd be one reason for him to train with her, being oblivious to her reactions because he already got his eyes on someone else.

To keep hope alive instead of dashing it. Another possibility is that he wants her acknowledge her as a man and so is oblivious until that goal itself is achieved. He wants to be strong enough to protect the woman he loves but when that woman is stronger than most guys then that just makes the goal much more difficult.
