Okay, I've been following this on and off for a while, and now I'm starting to wonder if it's gone too far. I mean, people are dying at this point, and friendships are being destroyed. Zun needs to put the old ladies back on their leash before someone just snaps.

Weeeell, it's just fan-fiction after all. Touhous dying left and right is nothing new, I mean... there are certain Heart Throbbing Adventures out there that just thrive in such environments.
I'm not too attached to fanfic series with serious tones that carry on for a long time. I prefer just short and silly hijinks, like for example Imizu's work, who can take even grotesque violence and turn it into harmless, playful fun. I'm not very big on this comic, but Niiko (Gonnzou) drawings are improving, which is usually the goal.
Can't complain though. These days, if a dedicated Touhou fan-comic artist manages to actually complete a long-running comic series, that's a feat on its own!

I think his point is that, this whole thing started as a silly game, and now it's gotten to the point where people actually die. So maybe it's gotten more serious than even ZUN wanted it to be.

Of course, ZUN apparently disappears people on the norm for disobeying him, so perhaps this is exactly as dark as he wants it to be...

Ahh, right, ZUN is a character within this, I forgot. That just made me think of the old Battle Royal comic by Pageratta where ZUN was also in but ENDORSED everyone to kill each other to decide the leading role of the next game. Of course, that was more comedy-based, so deaths were just funny and shrugged off. I'm certain there will be some kind of resolve at the end of this which just "fixes everything". Sometimes it's just difficult to know what the artist has decided the ending to be, if any at all, or just goes with the flow until the ending more or less ties itself in all nicely.

When the franchise author is a character and a villain in the doujin, it generally never ends well.

In the sense of "it's been 4 months since someone has uploaded something from him, with his last actual comic strip being from 6 months ago".

Pixiv has an update as recent as February 20, with an announcement about shonenjumpplus where he started serializing some original works, which was updated less than a week ago, April 3rd.
Alive and well, but, you know, "original works"; They don't get as much attention as franchise/fanworks, at least not from the get-go.
