Kouji and Yuuji's Akigumo is my favorite version of her. They turn her into a normal "real" character rather than a gag. They do it for a lot of the kanmusu, actually.

Ironically, Kouji and Yuuji's Fubuki was also my favorite version even though they turned her into a gag character

Even when they just do the character's typical gag, they do it well. As another example, their Shiranui is mostly just another Nuinui, but she's the nui'est Nuinui to ever nui.

Hamakaze is the "not easily bullied despite looking like she is, and is truly a monster when her inhibitions are relaxed" gag character.

It's a lot better than the typical "big boobs, passively accepts" type she and Ushio are usually portrayed as.

Eh, I'll disagree there. No matter how hard you try, a tired joke played straight will only ever be that.

It's when these guys try something new (see: Hamakaze being a booze monster) that they shine.

There's been a bit of variety in the way both characters have been portrayed, though, although I suppose that's because I pay more attention to the interesting characters in continuing doujins, rather than just one-shot images...

Otoufu's Ushio is an extremely girly girl that loves collecting stickers, but she has a bit of Yamato Nadeshiko willful reserve in her, as well, and could often surprise those who simply tried to take advantage of her, as well.

Himura Kiseki's Ushio "passively accepts", but it's only because she's a seriously suffering abuse victim with a thousand mile stare who's had her will to resist beaten out of her.

Even putting the "Sassy Hamakaze" aside, Hamakaze's always been portrayed as a bit peppier than Ushio has been, if only because her canon lines have more confidence than Ushio's flagrant "scared and flighty as a rabbit" lines.

It's also worth noting that both of their careers as actual ships are more celebrated for their attempts at rescuing various other ships or taking on survivors (along with Ikazuchi and Inazuma). It's probably for that reason that that all of them are portrayed as more gentle, caring, "sisterly" types than the other shipgirls.
