I'm pretty sure I've had this nightmare before.

I read a short story to this effect some time ago. Even took place in Japan, although the POV character was an American expatriate. Really creeped me out, despite not really being that scary, if that makes a lick of sense.

Reminds me of a Calvin & Hobbes story, and a fever fantasy of I had once. Those, of course, took place inside safe rooms with ceilings.
