I think this might be a minor mistranslation. Akagi says "どっちもはダメなんですか", which is more like "Wait, you mean I can't (ask for) both?!"
To say both are bad would not have that は, I think. It's the difference between どっちも by itself and どっちもは. Here, I think it's like Kaga asks "French or Italian?" and Akagi's saying 'I would answer "Both!' Is that not okay?" In other words, think about (どっちも) as a quote that's the subject of the sentence.
"どっちもダメなんですか" would be "Both are bad?!"
I admit that I'm not 100% sure but it would make a lot more sense.

I want this because the alternative scares me

To this day I'm still not used to CarDiv1 switching between Archer and Saber class...

Pretty sure you’re right. The growling stomach sound Akagi has also points towards this
