That's cling wrap, widely used to cover or seal up dishes in a plate so your fridge won't smell funky from all the food (not to mention prevent dehydrating them). You supposed to pull BOTH sides when opening a new pack so the metal 'teeth' outside can help you tear appropriately-sized sheets, but in case you fail like she did, you need to unwrap the other side really gently so the tear won't continue (or just put a little adhesive tape on it) and cut it above the tear before using it like normal.
