It's certainly not somewhere I'd stick my fingers, even with gloves.

I don't know about mice, but cats sure don't like it when you stick things in their ears.

Animals do not like fingers in their ears, let alone mice. I'm guessing the artist is not showing the fingers going into the ear canal but rather scratching the fur immediately in front of the ear (fingertips are hidden by the fur).

The same would apply to us humans as well. Imagine someone walking up to you and put a finger in your ear for no reason.
