Judging from what I've seen they really took an axe to the roster though. Many of the male/female variants of certain classes or just certain classes in general were removed, similar to what they did in Disgaea 2.

Makes sense. It's still a sprite based game, but they had to move it to HD sprites. Believe it or not, sprites take up a hell of a lot of room. Still, it'd not be disgaea to me if they took the route of 3D models. Part of the art style I love so much almost relies on them using sprites. I personally think it'd be a step down if they took the traditional step of cell shaded models instead...
Maybe later on, after tweaking it, they could find a way to pull it off and make it look good, but right now... I just don't really see it happening.
