Well he is really. It's more of a problem with the series' grasp on character motivations, but we're supposed to be seeing a girl who has loved a boy all his life and he remains oblivious to that. Now either he's autistic or he's a douche. Then he goes out with her friend who he's apparently never even met before, and has no fucking idea what effect it's having on Sayaka even though it's blatantly obvious to the viewers.

Maybe not autistic, more about oblivious to her affection and succeed in making it off-scale. Or he just selfish by heart, only Urobuchi knows?
Though the recent development tips the scale to the selfish part. I think he just used to being pampered, that he doesn't ready with tragedy ahead and just crumbles. He won't survive long even with Sayaka selling her soul.
