Match is already aliased, matchstick is another word for the same.

Not sure what to do with matchbox, probably the posts that can be tagged matches should be moved and matchbox be only for images like post #5550866.

Why move the posts? If a matchbox is in the picture, can't it be tagged with matchbox and matches?

You're of course right, I was a bit confused it seems.

Now I think it might actually be better to have the singular as the main tag because a single match seems more common than multiple.

Necroing this because I had the exact same thought. I find it odd that this tag uses the plural form, unlike most object tags, which are typically singular. The term "matchstick" is already used in holding_matchstick, so I don't see why it can't be used for the base tag as well. Might as well include implications for the holding tag too.
