Merge Kigurumi with Onesie

Posted under Tags

BUR #29091 has been rejected.

create alias kigurumi -> onesie

The tags kigurumi and onesie is basically used for exactly the same thing (a type of soft jumpsuit with hood and often with animal motif). It seems like it was considered separate mainly because the wiki page for kigurumi once misleadingly described it as "A type of cosplay", which is grossly incorrect. So I think it's time to merge them for good to avoid confusion.

Don't agree with this alias, especially with Animegao that implicates it. Notably from Wikipedia it's clear the Japanese term covers broadly full body costumes which is what Danbooru's definition of the tag was until the OP changed it themselves to narrow it only to costume pajamas Wikipedia.

Wikipedia:

Animegao kigurumi is a type of masked cosplay that has its origins in the official stage shows of various Japanese anime but has also been adapted by hobbyists. In Japan, most performers refer to this kind of cosplay as 'kigurumi' (着ぐるみ) instead of 'animegao' (アニメ顔, meaning "anime face"), which has been used overseas in order to differentiate the cosplay from the onesies sharing the same name.

Related to kigurumi implications. Animegao implying kigurumi means all posts under animegao cracked_kawaii_mask are tagged cosplay. Do they really count as cosplays? A character mask tag exists, I think it would fit those posts better. Same for something like post #3916530, where a character holds an animegao mask without there being any cosplay.

Also, in its current usage kigurumi mixes a lot of different concepts. Maybe it’s just me being unfamiliar with the term, but like… a glance at the Danbooru wiki and Wikipedia makes me wanna deprecate and split it into other tags, yet all I’ve got now is a rant instead of an explanation.

deprecate kigurumi

I actually talked about this in the Discord back in March, let me repeat the discussion there.

Damian0358: Just got reminded of the frustrating existence of kigurumi.
@bipface: i've also been thinking of trying to deprecate this
Damian0358: A deprecation wouldn't be enough, I think. You'd need to break it (and animegao) up first.
1. cosplay onesie (with utility alias kigurumi onesie)
2. animal onesie
3. proportional animegao
4. chibi animegao (or whatever the terms would be for 3 and 4)
5. whatever else is under kigurumi
bipface: of course
@Eok5: do we have a replacement for all these
Damian0358: No, hence my above comment.
@AngryZapdos: animal_costume
AngryZapdos: how's it differ
Damian0358: Isn't a fursuit an animal costume too?
You'd still need a narrower tag for the onesies.
AngryZapdos: animal onesie
Damian0358: Yeah, which I suggested above as one of the tags to come out of kigurumi.
That's one of the uses of that term.
But not the only one.
bipface: hence the confusion
@Shibi: it's under animegao
which implies kigurumi lol
Damian0358: Also, adjacent to that we also have mascot costume.
Updated kigurumi's wiki to reflect the ambiguity.

So I'll go one step further than aster1a, and actually propose a deprecation. Alongside character mask, we also have character costume to consider as well. Kigurumi's ambiguity has reigned long enough, a fracturing of the tag is needed.

remove implication animegao -> kigurumi
mass update kigurumi animegao solo -> -kigurumi

I would propose this instead. I agree animegao should be split from kigurumi, but I don't see why we should split kigurumi between cosplay and non-cosplay onesies. Unless I missed a completely different kind while looking through the tag, they look basically the same: onesies with hoodies that have eyes and sometimes ears of creatures on them, just that it's sometimes animals and sometimes specific creatures like Pokémon. I think the combination of the cosplay tag is enough to distinguish them.

And I'm not sure if a distinction between "proportional animegao" and "chibi animegao" is useful either but that's for the animegao tag to figure out.

I feel like a lot of people would prefer having tags differentiating post #40963 and post #9861772, especially as the latter currently is either tagged animegao (so you have to go through propotional animegao posts to find what you want) or mascot costume (so you have to go through non-character mascot costumes to find what you want), rarely both.

I agree animegao should be split from kigurumi, but I don't see why we should split kigurumi between cosplay and non-cosplay onesies. I'm just personally concerned that we'd just have the same issue as with animegao right now, where people don't bother properly tagging, in this case being not tagging cosplay when it's a cosplay onesie, especially when people are come to assume kigurumi's implication to cosplay, probably induced by legacy understandings of the term as highlighted by the wiki and the fact that the implication is so fucking ancient I can't even find it in the forum.

At bare minimum though, if your proposal goes through, it has to be renamed to be kigurumi onesie, just because of the ambiguity of the term kigurumi.

create alias kigurumi -> kigurumi_onesie
remove alias kigurumi -> kigurumi_onesie
create alias animal_pajamas -> kigurumi_onesie

While I don't think there is anything else currently included in the tag, the term kigurumi technically applies to any full body costume and if you look the japanese term up, you'll quickly see inflatable dinosaur costumes and fursuits. However, in common english parlance it does mainly refer to the animal-themed pajamas so I don't really think it needs to be deprecated or for it to be unaliased. Wikipedia calls these "cosplay pajamas" which is a term I don't really like so I'll take a term from the BUR that started this thread instead. This assumes that LightSolas's BUR to break up animegao and kigurumi goes through, of course.

Edit: I was drafting this up before I notice Damian0358's reply but I would like to argue that the idea of people not adding the cosplay tag is a minor issue. Most of the posts in a "kigurumi_onesie" tag wouldn't be cosplay posts and I can't see tagging it be any more difficult then tagging other cosplay posts. Also I assume that casual users who post once or twice have little legacy knowledge of implications and anyone who does is probably a builder who would know enough to check wikis and forum posts. (Optimistic, I know.)

I don't think it will be a big problem, when tagging a specific cosplay, people would usually add character_(cosplay) anyway, which would automatically add cosplay that way, right?

With these going through, some fursuits like post #6960932 would end up getting tagged as kigurumi onesie. It doesn’t feel right.
