It's pointless to fight against use of a very common fantasy creature, just like how we wouldn't get rid of elf in favour of traditional elf. It may be vague, but there are some creatures that you see, and "demon" is the first word that comes to mind.
However, its use should be reserved to depictions of demons that are least adjacent to traditional. They don't have to be stereotypical red-skinned devils with tridents and goat legs, but they should be truly "demonic". Right now, the first page of the tag is full of pics that don't qualify at all, just people who at most have horns or some other minor non-human traits.
The mazoku from Frieren, the akuma from Chainsaw Man, and the oni from Kimetsu no Yaiba were all translated as demons, so their pics are commonly tagged as such. KmY oni are really just vampires (although it wouldn't be a good idea to tag them as such), Frieren's mazoku are humans with horns apart from notable exceptions (Aura and the like should be tagged demon girl/boy), and Chainsaw Man's akuma are too diverse a bunch to be organised together.
Gardening most of these would be a good start.
