The tag that never seems to be sorted out should probably be sorted out at some point. Currently no way to tag coloured versions of bike shorts so people use the short colour tags right now which implicated shorts. Makes sense since "shorts" is literally in the name of the tag.

I think the primary issue with bike_shorts is the tag's name. If it was called spats (as they commonly are in translated manga) then there'd be much less disagreement and we'd likely already have bike shorts colour tags. Functionally, they occupy a different clothing layer to shorts. Bike shorts are worn a layer under shorts, in place of leggings or pantyhose. Because of this, I think it's reasonable to want more granular tagging between those layers. This would allow, for example, searching for different colours of shorts and bike shorts within the same image.
Changing the name of them to spats would allow for tags like yellow spats to exist without users getting confused by the short colour tags and keeping them separate things.

For the record, if the amount of work to fix posts that are tagged as both bike shorts and shorts when they shouldn't be is a determining factor in the vote for spats then I'm willing to go through it all. Might take a lil bit considering it's 20k posts but yeah. I'm not 100% fussed either way but would prefer them separate if I had to choose.

After this BUR was made, I noticed that the wiki for bike shorts had the copeworthy sentence of "In some places, these are known as spats for some reason," which inspired me to check why they were called 'spats' in other places, because they obviously had to have some reason, right?
Well, it's because of the Japanese. Based on the following resources, and liberal use of machine translation, it became clear that the main reason why the term caught on was because the term 'spats' caught on as a term for leggings in Japan for one reason or another, with the kinds that only go down as far as above the knees being more narrowly called 'short spats', while full-length leggings were 'long spats'. There was even an attempt in the 2000s to try and correct this error in Japanese and refer to them as leggings again, but that failed and they stuck with spats.
This is all to say, bike shorts are not shorts, they are short leggings, which means they fell under legwear (if those tags were still a thing, but they aren't due to topic #21283).
