Nuke night_sky

deprecate night_sky

I think it makes sense to replace night sky with sky color tags, but we need to deprecate the tag instead of nuking it to ensure we can still add the tags if they're missing.

Edit: On the other hand, a night sky search would accomplish the same thing, though blue users that want to help out won't be able to add an extra *_sky to their search.

isn't that because people are tagging it night sky and the implication adds both night and sky? if you delete the tag people might tag it just night and forget the sky tag

This is like saying we should make long_ponytail because people might tag ponytail and forget long_hair. It is not our job to ensure the maximum amount of gentags are added to a post by creating and maintaining hundreds of tandem tags that are easily replaceable by a two-tag search.

We have blue sky (sunny), cloudy sky (cloudy), orange sky and yellow sky (sunset/sunrise). Would you rather taggers use black sky instead of night sky?

If the sky in question is actually black, then yes, I would like to see it tagged with black_sky in addition to night and sky. I'd rather taggers use their brains and actually describe the sky in question instead of just slapping night_sky on it.

None of them are tagged with anything besides night_sky. In any case, this isn't even particularly relevant - please do me a favor and scroll through the night sky -night_sky search. There is literally no difference between the posts in that search and the posts in night_sky, which is why it is such a pointless tag in the first place.

I think people using night sky are under the delusion that it somehow gives more weight to the sky tag, when it's actually used for any amount of pixels suggesting the sky is in the picture and it is night.

sky_focus night should already suffice for posts about the night sky, else there's always night sky the search.

I also feel like a good amount of people defending this tag actually want starry sky instead. night sky itself doesn't give us anything that another tag won't achieve.

Ended up just nuking it out myself again with night + sky and deprecating the tag since it was only 39 posts. I thought about letting this go through since it being recreated, likely from force-of-habit, meant that it could be contentious enough to require an admin, but oh well, the deed is already done, and I was already thinking about doing it before the BUR was posted.

Wiki needs to be updated to a deprecation wiki.

How do you deprecate a tag? I've seen it mentioned a few times in the forum, but I haven't read anything about how to do it in the wiki.

On the Tags page, clicking on the three horizontal dots next to a tag and clicking Edit will take you to the page where you can deprecate or undeprecate the tag. At least, it used to be possible. Now it says to submit a BUR to do it. I don't know how WRS was able to deprecate it unless this is an undocumented Approver privilege or something.
