Questions regarding danbooru's user hospitality etc.

Posted under General

Hi, Ive been using danbooru for a while now but havent dabbled with posting or interacting with the active userbase or forums until recently where I decided to start posting some arts, I have a couple questions so I can get myself used to posting on danbooru a bit more

1st question is how is the hospitality in danbooru for users, I would really like to hear what people's opinion are about the website, is it toxic?, are there any chill forums people would make to posts some fun stuffs? leads me to my

2nd question, how serious are the forum normally, I mean Tags category can feel pretty serious and dedicated to the art of meticulously tagging each individual art at times, but are there any general threads people make for fun or off topic? (I know discord exists and I believe the fun stuffs would probably be there instead but I am still curious)

3rd question is, is it normal that when I just freshly posted something some of my posts gets downvoted immediately, I mean if its bad I would've taken the hint but getting it immediately or even inconsistently for the same artists feels kinda overwhelming and idk if rating on my posts would affect anything or not

4th final question I wanted to know how you guys a doing, thank you.

Hospitality will vary. Folks are prone to arguing in the forum and comments, but it's only really the latter that can get really toxic, and even then only in specific topics. If you're DMing individual users, it's more chill, though you'd probably give them a heart attack given how infrequently some might get DMs.

The thing with the forum is that we want folks to focus on contributing to the website, hence why it is 'serious'. The comments can be more lighthearted, but even there people don't like it when people just hornypost and bump the post in question, for instance. If you want to engage in casual conservation, for now you'll have to go to the Discord server. Questions on hospitality and toxicity apply as per above.

Unfortunately, it is normal. There are some users who just love downvoting everything they see for one reason or another, and it's never the same user either, various users focused on different topics and interests (some downvote because they don't want to see men, some downvote because they dislike a specific fetish, some downvote for the love of the game). But the important part is that the votes on a post do not matter. Whether or not you get approved all depends on approvers, who as far as I'm aware don't engage in this kinda shit. That still means having to hope the approvers like your posts enough to approve it, but it's at least a relief that the votes don't matter in this process.

We're doing fine, be sure to join the Discord!

Initially I thought this community would be similar to 4chan's, thankfully it's not the case. There are some people that are unpleasant to talk with, however. You can't like absolutely everyone, I guess.

Forum is almost entirely for the serious stuff. For casual conversation we have a Discord server.

It doesn't mean it's bad. Some people just downvote everything they don't like. And votes don't matter here at all.

Hi, I'm doing fine, thank you!

I personally don't send DMs (or ping users, which also sends a DM) unless it's something important like correcting a tagging mistake the user is making consistently or informing new users of certain features they could be using. If you're on the receiving end, you don't know when you first see that yellow "You have unread mail" banner whether you're being thanked, asked for something, or told you're doing something wrong. The possibility of that last one pretty much requires users to read it immediately so they can resolve the issue and not mess up further, which may interrupt their workflow.

Two things you definitely don't want to do with DMs is drag people back into arguments (we had one user who always pinged people in the comments because he hated the block quotes used when replying) and asking Approvers to approve your posts (feedback for deleted posts can be asked for in topic #7934). Doing either of these can potentially result in a negative feedback or even a ban.

Some users may be more okay with casual DMs than others. I'm not trying to scare you off from making them. Just making sure you're aware of what it's like on the recipient's side.

Yeah, I always feel like I have a heart attack whenever I get Dmailed, even though I don't feel like I get too many of the "WTF are you doing?" Dmails too often. I also rarely send Dmails, mostly because talking to people face-to-face is hard, so it has to be important I think.

Everyone is different in regards to Dmails however. Just keep in mind everyone has their own personality and all that jazz. Same goes for approvers approving posts, though there you only need one approver to like your post, so it's fine if you can't please everyone.

I'm doing fine. Just busy cataloguing my precious Nikki fanart (and whatever else catches my eye) lol.

1. Very toxic.

2. Average person on the website is using it for the art curation or browsing aspect. People don't go on the forum for entertainment persay. People also don't direct message for social reasons, but to bitch at each other. Discord is the social option.

3. If every single one of your posts have a single downvote it may be targeted and worth telling a mod. Otherwise it's random and whatever.
