Specifying traditional clothes

Posted under Tags

BUR #60864 is pending approval.

create alias german_clothes -> traditional_german_clothes
remove alias german_clothes -> traditional_german_clothes

I have no idea how receptive people would be to changing the *_clothes tags, where appropriate, to be traditional_*_clothes, but I'll make the suggestion regardless.

A reoccuring issue I've noticed is that you'll have users using the *_clothes for basically any outfits associated with that culture regardless of whether or not it meets the 'traditional clothes' criteria, which most often results in military uniforms being tagged with these tags when they'd otherwise get tagged with that peoples' military tag or otherwise. German clothes, for instance, had a bunch of Nazi uniforms tagged, though whether or not they were specifically Wehrmacht or else I didn't know, so the Nazi tag had to do.

As far as I could tell, there hasn't been a discussion on whether or not military uniforms and the like counted for these traditional clothes tags, but given more often than not a military tag would exist that could be used instead, it seems unnecessary to include them. So this rename would formalize a distinction.

Is the intent here for the tag to only be used for civilian clothing? Because old Prussian military uniforms are "traditional", strictly speaking.

That is what the intent of these tags has been since they were created, ex. topic #5037, topic #7458, topic #8977. The only reason why military uniforms have gotten away with being tagged is because of the simplicity of the tag names themselves. No one, for instance, searching for German clothes wants to see military uniforms next to dirndls, lederhosen, and the like; if they wanted to see those, they'd search one of the five German army tags we have, or their corresponding German era tags (German Empire/Imperial German Army, Weimar Germany/Reichswehr, Nazi/Wehrmacht, East Germany/Nationale Volksarmee, West Germany-Germany/Bundeswehr), or the other era tags (Prussia, Holy Roman Empire).

If we do it for this that leads to doing for the rest of the European clothes tags as well, which leads to eventually doing it for Japanese clothes and Chinese clothes too. I don't really want to rename Japanese clothes just because someone might be using it for shipgirls in Japanese WW2 naval uniforms.

I'd be willing to accept the BUR being rejected if it means that we take harsher action against users who mistag these tags (read: encouraging DMs to inform them about their mistakes).
